What are Quakers? Guatemala Friends Meeting Our Programs

The Religious Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers, was born in seventeenth century England. Historians date the birth to 1652 when George Fox, a young man in his late 20s, brought a message of hope – the promise of the immediate presence of God – to a community waiting in silence.

The in-country administration of the Guatemalafriends Scholarship/Loan Program, a joint project with Redwood Forest Friends Meeting in Santa Rosa, California, is under the direct care of our meeting. This program, known as PROGRESA in Guatemala, supports over 100 students each year. Most study at the university level though some attend a technical high school.

We also sponsor a work tour in which volunteers spend a week teaching English to our highly motivated students.
